She is a member of the Research Team at the Centre for Malaria Research and Phytomedicine (CMRAP) of the University of Port Harcourt. Eme holds a Bachelor in Science in Microbiology from the University of Uyo, a Masters Degree in Environmental Management from the University of Lagos, a Master of Public Health Degree in Health Promotion and Education from the University of Ibadan and a Diploma in Health Systems Management from Galilee College Israel. She is currently conducting a literature for her PhD in Public Health. Omotayo O Ebong, Ijeom H Ogbuehi and Eme O Asuquo from Nigeria made a historical victory over the international competition and won Ronald Ross Research Award-2015 in Public Health. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Public Health'. In their report on Practice of pre-treatment testing for malaria by health care providers in Port Harcourt, Nigeria they mention that Malaria accounts for 60% of outpatient visits and 30% hospitalization in Nigeria. In 2011, the World Health Organization Global Malaria Program’s new initiative, ‘T3 - Test, Treat and Track’ urges malaria-endemic countries and donors to move towards universal access to diagnostic testing before antimalarial treatment. In view of the foregoing, the present study was carried out to determine the practice of Health Care Providers (HCPs) with regards to testing before treatment of malaria in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. HCPs: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, community health workers (CHWs) and private medicine vendors (PMVs) were sampled. All the doctors and pharmacists interviewed were familiar with the treatment guideline of testing before treatment of malaria. However, only 89.6% nurses, 33.3% PMVs, and 25% CHWs had knowledge of the guidelines. With regards to adherence to the guidelines, only 44.3% of HCPs complied. HCPs’ limitations includes; emergency case (51.3%); laboratory costs (23.1%); non-availability of diagnostic tools (10. 3%); proximity to a laboratory (7.7%) and inability to use test kits (7.6%). This study shows that a significant number of the PMVs and CHWs have no knowledge of ‘testing before treatment’ initiative. It also reveals that inadequate resources are a major limiting factor to compliance to guidelines. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Omotayo O Ebong, Ijeom H Ogbuehi and Eme O Asuquo as valuable intellectuals for the Nigeria offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for Nigeria is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus Nigeria which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Omotayo O Ebong, Ijeom H Ogbuehi and Eme O Asuquo to world. For proper management of malaria endemicity in Nigeria, there is the need to strengthen the capacity of health care providers to adhere to global policies for malaria treatment and to provide increased access to diagnostic tools. This study was limited in scope, as only health care providers in Port Harcourt region of Nigeria were sampled. Further work should be done on a larger scale to substantiate the evidence presented in this study. They recommend public-private sector partnership so as to increase fund availability and access to Rapid Diagnostic test kits for a more efficient health care delivery in malaria endemic countries. Continued public health enlightenment is also needed to educate the population on the gains of proper case management of malaria. More so, since Private Medical Vendors have remained a significant force in informal health services in the country, periodic training is necessary to keep them informed of advances in treatment guidelines and advise them on need for appropriate referral of complicated cases. All contributed equally to the conduct of the research and manuscript writing. The authors declare that they have no competing interests. The study received financial support from World Bank STEP-B Project. They appreciate the contribution of the Health Care Providers especially the Patent Medicine Vendors that participated in this study. Special thanks go to all the staff of the Centre for Malaria Research and Phytomedicine and the industrial training students attached to the centre during the study period for their invaluable role in data collection.
The Camillo Golgi Research Award-2015 in Cell Biology goes to Ponnamparambil Purushothaman Binitha and Ramadasan Kuttan from India. The research findings were published on world’s prestigious The Journal for Cell Biology. International Agency for Standards and Ratings recognizes the researchers among World's 500 Most Influential Cytologist for the year 2015 on earth. Dr. Ramadasan Kuttan is Research Director at Amala Cancer Research Centre, Amala Nagar, Thrissur, Kerala, India. He completed his B.Sc in Chemistry from University of Kerala, India. He did M.Sc in Applied Chemistry, University of Kerala, India. He also did Ph.D in Biochemistry from University of Madras, India. Binitha P. P. is Ph.D scholar at Amala cancer research centre, Amala Nagar, Thrissur, Kerala, India. He completed his B.Sc in Biochemistry from SreeKrishna College, Guruvayur, University of Calicut, India. He did M.Sc in Bio chemistry, Calicut University campus, Thenhippalam, University of Calicut, India. He also did M.phil from Avinashilingam University, India. Effect of long term oral administration (180 days) of low dose of carbofuran (5 mg/kg body weight) was evaluated on serum and different tissue enzymes of Wistar rats. The activities of mitochondrial enzymes such as isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and NADH dehydrogenase were decreased significantly in liver homogenate of carbofuran treated animals. Hexokinase activity was found to be significantly increased in liver during chronic administration of carbofuran to rats. Glucose-6-phoshate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose 1, 6 bisphospatase were significantly decreased in carbofuran treated rats. In addition to these there was significant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and marked elevation of creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and gamma glutamyl transferase (γ-GT) in serum and different tissues of treated animals. The findings of this study suggested that carbofuran induced oxidative stress caused damage to rat liver mitochondrial tissues by altering mitochondrial dehydrogenases as well as glycolytic and gluconeogenic enzymes. The results also indicated that carbofuran administration produced neurological failure in Wistar rats due to inhibition of AchE and elevated the activity of CK, LDH and γ-GT in serum and tissues indicating leakage of these enzymes from damaged tissues leading to specific organ toxicity. Long term administration of carbofuran administration inhibits AchE and increased other biomarker enzymes like LDH, CK and γ-GT. The activities of citric acid cycle enzymes were found to be decreased which may be due to mitochondrial damage caused by carbofuran induced oxidative damage. Increased free radical production reduces the ability of the cell to meet the energy demands by reducing the levels of mitochondrial TCA cycle enzymes. Biochemical alterations like the increased hexokinase activity and decreased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1, 6-bisphosphateas during chronic carbofuran administration might be due to increased metabolic need for energy requirement when alters biochemical reactions including glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. They have not included all the mitochondrial and carbohydrate metabolisms in this study. Other cellular enzymes which are affected by carbofuran should also look into. Long term carbofuran administration (5 mg/kg body weight) in rats produced significant lowering of mitochondrial enzymes. Carbofuran administration produced lowering of carbohydrate metabolism except hexokinase activity. Carbofuran administration produced lowering of AchE in serum and tissues. CK, LDH and γ-GT were found to be increased in long term carbofuran. The authors are thankful to the Managing Director, Amala cancer research centre, Amala Nagar, Thrissur, India for providing necessary facilities.

Smriti Irani roll backs Sanskrit from German Soup at Kendriya Vidyalayas

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani today dismissed Sanskrit episode. This is latest controversy with her. Ms Irani said that teaching German under aMemorandum of Understanding or MoU signed in 2011 had been in violation of the Constitution. An investigation has already been launched to find out how the MoU was signed. The minister said that three language formula was very clear that any of the 23 Indian languages listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution could be opted for. She clears that German will continue to be taught as a foreign language.
"My endeavour is whatever I do should be done so that it is within law and favours the students," she said.
(. 'Education system is now a game of politics.' ...... if you don't like illiterate Smriti Irani, do you prefer earlier PM Man Mohan Singh as literate one.. Regional Politicians has to decide what our kids have to feed)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday assured German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he would look into the controversy surrounding the teaching of German in Kendriya Vidyalayasor central government schools in the country. A decision to replace German with Sanskrit as a third language in these schools has disappointed Germany.
"Our Prime Minister assured her that he himself is a votary of young Indian children learning other languages. How it is best done within the confines of the Indian system, we will work it out," Syed Akbaruddin, India's foreign ministry spokesperson
German should be taught as a foreign language, similar to French, Mandarin etc. These foreign languages cannot be the third language under the constitution of India. Sanskrit, Tamil, Marathi etc. should be the third language, while German can be taught as the foreign language. Sanskrit is not going to give any advantage to the student.

Thus Nigeria which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Adekanye E.A., Monu J.O. and Ogungbeni, J.I. to world. They reports that Nigerian university libraries need to do more in marketing and promotion of their products and services. For example, that most of the university libraries in Nigeria have not been taking advantage of the social media in marketing their libraries. No library can survive in the 21st century without effectively applying the instrument of information and communication technology. University libraries need to achieve an imaginative design of service and products, and develop effective communication methods and a feedback mechanism to improve service. Though the concept of charging for information, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, is a difficult task, university libraries must consider what funds that can be generated this way. In universities where fees for library services are included in the total fee payable by students, library management should ensure that these fees are used for library development. The correct application of information technology and the adoption of the marketing approach will help improve services for users and enhance the reputation of library and information services and professionals. Librarians should be strategic and deliberate in using their representations on faculty boards to market the library. University library acquisition, organization and dissemination of information must be based on the modern concept of marketing to achieve reader satisfaction. It must endeavor to nurture culture of customer service to enhance its image in the eyes of the users. Volunteer Librarians can come together to develop materials and resources as well as also organize workshops for librarians to learn and apply marketing planning in their libraries (Adekunmisi, 2013).Omotayo O Ebong, Ijeom H Ogbuehi and Eme O Asuquo are conferred with Ronald Ross Research Award-2015 in Public Health by IASR

Adenkola Adeshina Yahaya and Onyeberechi A.S. receive Hans Adolf Krebs Research Award-2015 in Biochemistry
17 March, 2015, Nigeria, USA NEWS CORP
In a major move in the field of Biochemistry, Adenkola Adeshina Yahaya and Onyeberechi A.S. from Department of Physiology Pharmacology and Biochemistry, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria are awarded with Hans Adolf Krebs Research Award-2015 in Biochemistry. The worldwide competition involved many countries. World’s scientific communities turn their attention to merit of the scientific concept involved in it. It is catalyzing the funding and research enthusiasm. The research findings appeared on world’s prestigious The Journal of Free Radicals and Antioxidants. IASR recognized the researchers among world's 500 Most influential Biochemistry for the year 2015. Road transportation exposes animals to unfamiliar environment with concurrent environmental stress, which elicit a stress response and cause increase in free radicals generation. This study was designed to investigate the effect of administration of combination of ascorbic acid + alpha- tocopherol and ascorbic acid alone on oxidative stress parameters of rams transported by road for eight hours. On the day of transportation, 7 rams (Group 1) were individually administered with ascorbic acid at the dose of 250 mg/kg dissolved in 10 ml of water and also alpha-tocopherol at the dose of 75 mg/kg, per os while another 7 rams (Group 2) was administered individually with ascorbic acid (250 mg/kg) only. The 3rd group (7 rams) was the control, and they were administered with only 10 ml of sterile water. Blood samples (5 ml) were taken in the morning a day before transportation, I h, 8 h journey time and 3 days post-transportation for full blood count and the harvested serum for analysis of oxidative parameters. In conclusion this study indicated that eight hours road transportation of ram is a source of stress and co-administration of ascorbic acid and alpha tocopherol ameliorate oxidative stress parameters due to synergistic effect. The research demonstrated clearly that animals transported for eight hours are stressful due to production of enormous free radicals. The driver of the vehicle want to exceed the recommended constant speed of 45 km/hr, also some analysis was not done immediately as a result the sample has to be stored in the refrigerated condition until the analysis is done. Transported animals should be administered with antioxidants prior to transportation by road in order to reduce the risk of adverse effects of transportation stress on their health. However co – administration of (AA + α-T) is better than singly administration of AA, possibly due to synergistic effect.Khan Shafqat Ali*, Javaid Muhammad Arshad and Umar Farooq receive Helen Adams Keller Research Award- 2015 in Education

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at Mexico and California
20 December, 2014, Mexico, USA NEWS CORP
A program established under the 1997 UC-CONACYT Agreement of Cooperation in Higher Education and Research. The University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS) and Mexico's National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) are pleased to announce a joint program to support postdoctoral researchers at the University of California or at Mexican institutions of higher education or research. The primary objective of this program is to advance academic scholarship by emerging Mexican researchers and UC scientists and scholars in the early stages of their careers, after obtaining their Ph.D. In addition, the program seeks to support existing or developing binational academic networks by enhancing collaborative research projects between UC and Mexican faculty and institutions through the innovative involvement and training of new researchers. In keeping with these goals, postdoctoral applicants will be considered who will be actively participating in a research project or training program at the host UC campus or Mexican institution, with an emphasis on using the stay to advance their own academic and professional development as well as to solidify future binational research ties and networks. Applicants are encouraged to connect their proposed stays with projects submitted to the UC MEXUS-CONACYT Collaborative Grants Program competition. The program also seeks to support projects that include.....
Peshawar School Attack

Hafiz Saeed planning attacks against India: IB report. The IB report mentioned that two hotel lobbies in Delhi and some unspecified highway between Agra and Delhi are on their radar. The United Nations declared JuD a terrorist organisation and also individually designated Saeed as a terrorist in December 2008. Saeed also has a bounty of $10 million on his head. The attack began in the morning hours, with about half a dozen gunmen entering the school - and shooting at random. Students wearing their green school uniforms could be seen on Pakistani television, fleeing the area. Pakistani Taliban spokesman Mohammad Khurasani warned civilians to detach themselves from all military institutions. The Pakistani Taliban is claiming the attack was justified because the Pakistani army had long been killing innocent children and families of their fighters. Walls riddled with bullet holes, an auditorium floor covered in blood and a burnt out office. Military spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa said the school principal was inside her office when the attackers made their way into the administration building. He said she locked herself into the bathroom but was killed after a grenade was thrown through a vent and into the room. Maj Gen Bajwa said the attackers made.....

The Senate approved President Obama's nomination of Dr. Vivek Murthy to serve as U.S. surgeon general, despite opposition from Republicans and some Democrats over his support for gun control. Dailymail reported that Vivek Murthy attracted opposition from gun-rights advocates because of his belief that doctors should ask patients about guns in the home. He founded Doctors for Obama, a campaign group that supported the Obamacare law. 51-37 vote barely cleared the bar just days before the GOP takes control of the Senate and will run all its committees. Murthy, 37, a physician at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and instructor at Harvard Medical School, won confirmation on a vote of 51-43. He's a co-founder of Doctors for America – originally called Doctors for Obama – a group that has pushed for affordable health care and supports Obama's health care law....

Smriti Irani roll backs Sanskrit from German Soup at Kendriya Vidyalayas
News
IST
