K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar, given the rock star fame in Entomology, as declared among World’s 500 Most Influential Entomologists for Year 2015 on Earth. In a worldwide meritorious competition, K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar grabbed the world’s prestigious Max Planck Research Award-2015 in Entomology. Representing the great legacy of country, K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar established the matter of proud to civilians of India. International Media is now seriously looking towards country, since K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar made a remarkable historical achievement. Entomologists are ensured that under the leadership of K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar, millions of emerging intellectuals would be benefited and inspired around the world. The author, Dr. P. Senthilkumaar is a researcher specializing in Environmental Toxicology and the effect of xenobiotics on Biodiversity. He obtained Ph.D. Degree in Zoology from University of Madras, Chennai. He has produced 07 Ph.D. and 17 MPhil candidates. He has published more than 30 papers in National and International level. He is a Fellow of Member of Zoological Society of India, Fellow of Society of Life Sciences, Fellow of Society of Animal Biotechnology and Fellow of Indian Academy of Environmental Sciences. Special interested in other fields like Fishery Science and Biodiversity. Currently serving as Head of P.G. and Research Department of Zoology, Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai, India.
K. Silambarasan is interested in Molecular Taxonomy in fishes and Biodiversity. He has obtained M.Phil Degree in Zoology from University of Madras, Chennai. He is doing Ph.D. in Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai under the guidance of Dr. P. Senthilkumaar. Current research interests include Biodiversity and Fishery science.
K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Max Planck Research Award-2015 in Entomology. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Biodiversity'. In their report on Biodiversity of Insect Fauna in Kurumpuram Reserve Forest, Marakkanam, Tamil Nadu India they mention that Biodiversity is one of the most important issues worldwide. The study aims to assess the diversity of insect fauna in Kurumpuram reserve forest which is adjacent to Kaliveli flood plain, Marakkanam, Tamil Nadu. The present investigation was conducted pre monsoon months in 2013. A total of 40 species of insect population belonging to 19 families (Cicindelidae, Scarabaeidae, Mylaridae, Cerambycidae, Coccinellidae, Apidae, Formicidae, Culicidae, Muscidae, Coenagrionidae, Aeshnidae, Macromidae, Gomphidae, Mantidae, Libelllulidae, Pyrgomorphidae, Acridadae, Nymphalidae, and Pieridae) were collected and identified from three different habitats. Order: Lepitoptera recorded a maximum density followed by Coleoptera, Odonata, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera, Diptera and Mantodea. Forest fires, illegal hunting for wild animals and agricultural activities are among threats to Kurumpuram reserve forest which directly affect its insect biodiversity. To mitigate these threats, it is important to adopt a multidisciplinary and participatory approach in smart partnership involving relevant stakeholders and the local communities in promoting and monitoring environmental awareness. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar as valuable intellectuals for the country offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of K. Silambarasan and P. Senthilkumaar to world.
The justification of this study was to conduct preliminary observations to identify areas with large population of insects in Kurumpuram reserve forest, Marakkanam, Tamil Nadu, India.
The biodiversity of insect fauna in Kurumpuram reserve forest was impressively high in three habitats. Threatened species sampled from this survey with a short period indicates the significance of protecting and conserving this forest area. Such findings provide important data to enhance the need and effort in biodiversity conservation. The data revealed will be adding to awareness to be inculcated in insect biodiversity of Kurumpuram reserve. It also provides base line data for upcoming researchers and gives wide scope for further study.
The experimental data was collected by K. Silambarasan. The author was interested in Taxonomy and Biodiversity field. He described two new species of crabs. The author, Dr. P. Senthilkumaar is related to the field of Environmental of Toxicology and the effect of xenobiotics on the Biodiversity. You can share this News URL on Facebook or your Social Media Site/ blog.
