He has 15 published research articles in different national and international journals. Himalayan forests are the repository of large number of medicinal plants valuable for the local people. These plants hold a great importance in traditional healthcare systems thereby providing clues to new areas of research in human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation. The present study documented the indigenous knowledge and usage of 98 plants belonging to 61 families and 95 genera in Theog Forest Division of Himachal Pradesh, North Western Himalaya. The information on traditional use was collected through semi-structured questionnaires and personal interviews. The highest number of species (38) were reported to be utilized as edibles followed by medicinal and aromatic (30), fodder (23), fuelwood (16), veterinary medicine (12) and agricultural implements (8). The leaves (43 species) were most commonly used plant part followed by wood (30), fruits (21) and whole plant (10). The family Fabaceae (7 species) followed by Lamiaceae (5), Rosaceae (5) and Asteraceae (4) were the dominant families of plants utilized by the locals. Plants studied were used as medicine, food, fuelwood, fodder and in socio-religious ceremonies. The study aimed at gathering knowledge pertaining to ethnic uses of plants in order to conserve the ethnobotanical wisdom of people in the study area. Of total 442 plant species found in the area, 98 species (22%) were recorded and identified, which are being utilized by the indigenous people. The documentation will help in the preservation of indigenous knowledge of locals of the region. The study was conducted with limited resources and further work to find out the nutrients available, methods of preparation and doses (for medicinal plants) and phyto-chemicals responsible for the action in these species will add to the findings of this work. In order to preserve traditional knowledge, the management authorities need to prepare ‘Community Biodiversity Register’ which should include documentation of local herbs, their usage as well as indigenous knowledge lying behind the biological resources and also there is a need to encourage and ensure active participation of local communities in sustainable harvesting and conservation of natural resources. In order to recognize economic value of widely available phyto-resources, on ground policy tools have failed which has resulted in a dearth of studies that document traditional knowledge. Locals have recognized the importance and role of plants they could play in developing their economy. Thus, there is a need of policy mix and inter-sectoral integration which focus on coordination at spatial and instrumental scales. Block or division offices in various districts might be encouraged to get involved in documenting the traditional knowledge of locals across the country. An adaptive and integrated policy approach both at national and local levels should be developed to document and preserve the traditional knowledge before it goes extinct. Dinesh Kumar Pal contributed to the collection of data through questionnaire surveys, analysis of data; Amit Kumar contributed to the analysis, interpretation of data and writing the manuscript; Bhupender Dutt contributed to the design of questionnaire forms, and Sachin Sharma contributed to analysis and interpretation of data. All authors declared that they have no competing interests.

Breaking News: In a major move in the field of Medicinal Plants, Amit Kumar*, Upma Manral and Sachin Sharma from India are awarded with International Sustainable Development Research Award- 2015. The worldwide competition involved many countries. World’s scientific communities turn their attention to merit of the scientific concept involved in it. It is catalyzing the funding and research enthusiasm. The research findings appeared on world’s prestigious International Journal of Medicinal Plants. Traditional practices have played an important role in various Indian medicine systems, but have now become confined to remote rural areas. Due to change in the life style and economic status with increased influence of market economy, the transfer of indigenous knowledge about medicinal plants to the younger generations has been declining. There are few studies available from the state of Haryana which document the traditional knowledge of locals, of various medicinal plants and their uses. This might lead to loss of local knowledge in due course of time. The article describes a unique traditional practice of treating muscle strain by farmers using leaves of two widespread wild medicinal plants viz., Ipomoea carnea Jacq. (Convolvulaceae) and Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae). Focused group discussions with experienced rural folk and extensive household survey were conducted in village Muradnagar in the district Kurukshetra of Haryana, India. The mature leaves in former and tender in later were found effective in this ailment. The practice has been reported to provide healing in acute pain within one week of regular use. The documentation will help in the preservation of indigenous knowledge from rural sector of Haryana. Documentation of unique traditional practice for treating muscle strain. The practice has been reported to provide healing in acute pain within one week of regular use. The documentation will help in the preservation of indigenous knowledge of locals of the region. The study was conducted during a short span of time with limited resources and further work on phytochemicals responsible for the action in these species will add to the findings of this work. There is a need of documenting the traditional knowledge of farmer community of the state which has not received due attention in the past. Also, research focused on phytochemicals in widely available plant species would add greatly to the development of pharmaceutical sector. Various policy tools have failed to recognize economic value of widely available medicinal plants for the pharmaceutical industry that has resulted in a dearth of studies that document traditional knowledge. People have recognized the importance of medicinal plants and role they could play in developing the industry. However, still it has not covered all the ecosystems and local communities across the country. Focus has been given to mountainous region of country and local communities in remote valleys of Himalaya or tribal across the country. But, rural communities of states such as Haryana should not be neglected who might have vast knowledge about ethnomedicinal use of plants from their surroundings. Thus, there is a need of policy mix and inter-sectoral integration which focus on coordination at spatial and instrumental scales. Block offices in various districts might be encouraged to get involved in documenting the traditional knowledge of locals across the country. In order to preserve traditional knowledge, the management authorities need to prepare community biodiversity register which should include documentation of local medicinal herbs, their medicinal usage as well as indigenous knowledge lying behind the biological resources. Amit Kumar contributed to the collection of data through questionnaire surveys, analysis of data and writing the manuscript; Upma Manral and Sachin Sharma contributed to analysis and interpretation of data and writing the manuscript. The authors declare that they have no competing interests. All authors have read and approved the manuscript. The authors are grateful to the local informants for sharing their traditional knowledge, especially Shri Sharwan Kumar for practically demonstrating the usage and Dr. Ishwari D. Rai, Ninad B. Raut and Dr. Deepu Vijayan for critically evaluating the article.

Kiran Meena* and Pamil Tayal receive Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran Research Award- 2015 in Bioprocess Technology

27 February, 2015, India, USA NEWS CORP

The Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran Research Award- 2015 goes to Kiran Meena* and Pamil Tayal from India. This is an excellent global opportunity to recognize the meritorious efforts by individual and organization. The research findings were published on world’s prestigious International Journal of Medicinal Plants. Artemisia annua is an annual herb, known for its antimalarial drug – artemisinin. The drug is used in combination with its derivatives to prevent the emergence of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Artemisinin is synthesized through mevalonate pathway in cytosol or methylerythritol phosphate pathway in the plastids and gets accumulated as a secondary metabolite in glandular trichomes. Low yield of drug is recovered using hydrocarbons from the leaves. However due to the emerging malarial cases worldwide, the commercial yield of the drug needs to be enhanced. Various modern technological practices such as semi-synthetic production of artemisinin using microbes (yeast), in vitro propagation of A. annua, selecting high artemisinin producing varieties and use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi during cultivation are used now-a-days accounting for increments in the drug production. The review highlights the molecular mechanism of action of antimalarial drug and methods to enhance its concentration in plant parts in vivo as well as in vitro. It is proposed that biologists should focus on an integrated approach for enhancement and effective utilization of the drug. The review highlights the synthesis of antimalarial compound in different plants belonging to different genera. The biosynthetic pathways have been explored in Artemisia annua for designing antimalarial combined therapies along with the production of artemisinin derivatives. The work emphasizes on the mechanism of action of artemisinin against Plasmodium falciparum. The review collectively demonstrates the current scenario of production and ways to enhance the concentration of antimalarial drug. It was suggested to future researchers to look for an integrated approach for drug enhancement and recovery with simultaneous curtailment in the cost. Artemisinin drug extracted from Artemisia annua is used extensively to cure endemic disease - malaria in Asia. In spite of this, the cultivation of the plant is not widespread. Also, limited extraction procedures with low drug yields are followed till date that further adds in plant exploitation. In the last decade, although the researchers have defined ways to enhance the drug yields but the cost management has been neglected. The review states the different approaches which can be combined together to improve the drug quality and quantity as well as minimize the cost. As the review shows all the available methods and approaches for drug extraction and its enhancement, it is recommended to agribusiness companies and research followers to cultivate the plant on a large scale to meet the growing demands of antimalarial drug. Also, better drug extraction procedures with cost effective measure should be laid down. Meena K. has collected the data and Tayal P. has drafted the manuscript. Both authors have discussed, revised and commented on the manuscript at all stages. The authors certify that this manuscript is original and has been written by stated authors. Authors declare that they have no conflict or competing interests. Authors are highly thankful to Shivam Gupta for bringing the proposal of the review. The authors are thankful to University of Delhi for providing financial assistance.

Two new species of the genus Tetracotyle Reported from North India

27 February, 2015, India, USA NEWS CORP

Helminths are a serious threat to their hosts causing loss to the fish-based economy. A large number of fishborne infections, caused by fishborne zoonotic trematodes because freshwater fishes serve as the second intermediate host in the life cycle of many helminths. There is limited information available on this aspect in Indian perspective. The present communication attempts to provide a detail description about two strigeids species viz. Tetracotyle multilobulata n. sp. and Tetracotyle madhubanensis n. sp. parasitizing freshwater fishes, collected from Eastern U.P., India. The species are characterized on the basis of shape, structure, place and position of oesophagus, intestinal caeca, holdfast organ, hold fast gland and number of genital rudiments. Tetracotyle multilobulata n. sp. and Tetracotyle madubanensis n. sp. are new species of the Tetracotyle group. Identification of the parasite has been done using morphological characters from live specimens as well as mounted specimen. As Earlier described trematodes species Mastacembelus armatus (Lacep.) was parasitized by T. fausti (Rai and Pande, 1969) nom. nov., Syn. Diplostomulum type Rai and Pande, 1969 only. Hense it’s a new host record for Tetracotyle group. The major drawback lies in the knowledge and uniformity of taxonomic characters resulting in multiplication of species due to unavailability of good equipment in last decades. It will reform them by using advance tools and techniques. There is still a lot of scope in the areas where hosts have not been surveyed for infection, especially eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. Thus, there is a chance of getting new species of such Strigeids group. Worms were studied alive to saw the pattern of reserve excretory system while detailed internal structures of specimens from mounted slides in Canada Balsam to short out this issue. During course of study from 2007-2010 fishes were therefore, examined and author has succeeded in making a collection of some metacercariae of Tetracotyle sp. from different host and locality. This appear new to science which form the basis of the present work. Author is \thankful to Prof. Nirupama Agrawal and Prof. K.C. Pandey (Department of Zoology, Lucknow University, Lucknow) for their valuable suggestions. Authorities of DST are thankfully acknowledged for financial assistance (SR/SO AS-44/2005).

Z.T. Al Ahmar receives World Dentistry Research Award- 2015

26 February, 2015, Iraq, USA NEWS CORP

Z.T. Al Ahmar receives World Dentistry Research Award- 2015. The research findings were published on world's prestigious most read journal: The Journal for Dentistry. Aim: This study was to designed to compare differences in transverse dimensions of dental arches, alveolar widths and skeletal factors of Class II division 1, Class II division 2 malocclusion. Methods: Dentoskeletal characteristics of class II malocclusion subjects were evaluated using cephalometric radiograph and dental cast of 70 untreated patients. Sample included 37 class II Division 1 and 33 class II Division 2 malocclusion patients. Inter canine, inter premolar, inter molar, inter canine alveolar, inter premolar alveolar ,inter molar alveolar widths are measured on study models. Radiographs digitized using Auto CAD program all the data compared by independent t- test. Results: Showed statistically significant difference between groups for maxillary inter premolar, inter molar, alveolar inter premolar, mandibular inter canine and inter canine alveolar. Results revealed SNB angle was responsible for skeletal sagittal difference between groups. Class II division 1 showed a retrognathic mandible. Conclusion: maxillary inter premolar, inter molar and alveolar interpremolar widths were significantly narrower in the Class II division 1. Rapid maxillary expansion rather than slow expansion may be considered. There was a significant reduction of mandibular intercanine width in division 2 subjects. Cass II division 1 subject show more retrognathic mandible than class II division 2 subjects. The data suggest that knowledge of the craniofacial growth process particularly skeletal and dentoalveolar growth pattern in Class II malocclusion patients orthodontic and orthopedic therapies may be a clinical usefulness procedure leading to proper choice of treatment time, modality to improve and to shorten the period of treatment, avoiding adverse consequences. The limitation of the study lies in the fact that the database collected from the cephalometric x-ray of untreated patients with class II malocclusion which is a two dimensional view instead of using a digital computerized tomography scan(3D ) view so that the dimensions can be measured in a 3 axis of lines. The research was conducted by the Author at the University of Babylon, Iraq. The author has given their contribution to this paper in relation to her competing interests.

Saif Hameed and Zeeshan Fatima receive Robert Koch Research Award-2015 in Tuberculosis

26 February, 2015, India, USA NEWS CORP

Saif Hameed and Zeeshan Fatima receive Robert Koch Research Award-2015 in Tuberculosis. The research findings were published on world's prestigious most read journal: The Journal of Chest Disease and Tuberculosis. One-third of the world's population is thought to have been infected with M. tuberculosis, with new infections occurring in about 1% of the population each year. In 2007, an estimated 13.7 million chronic cases were active globally, while in 2013, an estimated 9 million new cases occurred. In 2013 there was between 1.3 and 1.5 million associated deaths, most of which occurred indeveloping countries. The total number of tuberculosis cases has been decreasing since 2006, and new cases have decreased since 2002. The rate of tuberculosis in different areas varies across the globe; about 80% of the population in many Asian and African countries tests positive in tuberculin tests, while only 5–10% of the United States population tests positive. More people in the developing world contract tuberculosis because of a poor immune system, largely due to high rates of HIV infection and the corresponding development of AIDS. Tuberculosis (TB) is among the leading causes of mortality throughout the world. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is the causative agent of TB, infecting more than 1/3 of the world's human population. MTB has adopted numerous features which contribute to its survival within the hostile environment. MTB has unique cell wall with high lipid content and displays a wide array of complex lipids and lipoglycans on its cell surface. Its cell wall is composed of 60% lipids, mainly mycolic acid (MA) which is responsible for low permeability of their cells to various antibiotics rendering drug resistance as well as the characteristic differential acid fast staining. Mycobacterial lipids which play an imperative role during the infection of MTB have been known to be involved in its pathogenicity. Certainly, closer view is required to further elucidate the role of lipids and many other lipid derivatives in establishment of MTB infection. Taken together, this review focuses on the significance of lipid molecule in MTB far from being just a building block of cell membrane and an energy reservoir to meet the energy expenses of the cell. TB remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. 11 new grants from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will speed development of TB vaccines, diagnostic tests, and drugs in support of the Global Plan to Stop TB . Financial assistance in the form of Young Scientist awards (2013/37B/45/BRNS/1903) to Z.F and S.H. from Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Mumbai and (SR/FT/LS-173/2010) to Z.F from Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), New Delhi is deeply acknowledged. We thank Prof. S. M. Paul Khurana, Dean, Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology for encouragement.

25 February, 2015, India, USA NEWS CORP

Samuel Afful*, Johannes A.M. Awudza, Shiloh Osae, Slyvester K. Twumasi and Andrews Affum receive Nelson Mandela Research Award-2015 in Chemical Science. Their research findings were published on world's prestigious most read journal: The Journal of Chemical Science. The occurrence, levels and sources of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Weija Lake are presented and levels revealed varying concentrations in the water and the sediments. Liquid-liquid extraction with hexane was used for the extraction of the compounds from the water samples while sediment samples were sonicated on ultrasonic bath with hexane/acetone (3:1) solvent system. The extracts were then cleaned up with florisil and quantified on a micro-capillary gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector. In all, five indicator PCB congeners namely, PCB # 28, 52, 101, 138, 180 and fifteen OCPs, α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, γ-chlordane, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, α-endosulfan, β-HCH, endosulfan sulfate, p,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD, and methoxychlor were detected. However, the levels of α-HCH, β-HCH, aldrin, dieldrin, γ-chlordane and PCB #118, 153 were below detection limit in the water compartment. In sediments, the mean concentration ranged from 0.15 µgkg -1 dry weight (α-HCH) to 7.08 µgkg -1 dry weight (PCB 52). PCB 28 was detected with the highest concentration of 2.50 µgL -1 in water samples. Data analysis by one way anova indicated significant differences in the levels of most of the organochlorines sampled from the various locations. Generally, the mean levels of the organochlorines in the Weija water and sediments were below quality guideline values. The results, based on one year monitoring, therefore suggest that organochlorine compounds investigated in the present study may not pose health hazard in the waters from Weija Lake. Even though the use of GC-ECD for determination of organochlorine pollutants is well established, the absence of applying other alternative proven techniques for confirmation of OCs identified in the samples could be a limitation.
