The term ‘competitiveness’ which is key to survival and growth of business, and one which is widely used in management, has not been adequately explored from the perspective of how it can be quantified and measured. The framework described here, which draws from current literature, could be useful in understanding the determinants of competitiveness of firms and how it can be measured. The benefits of doing an empirical research would be multifold and holds practical value for industry and business.
The Research highlight is clear conceptual basis for developing a measure of competitiveness of firms based on factors which affect competitiveness in a given industry. A framework which can help determine the key factors of firm level competitiveness, followed by an empirical research to establish the relationship of competitiveness, in terms of an index, and the key variables determining competitiveness can be useful to practitioners of management.
K V Balasubramaniam, is presently Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Ltd. He holds a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Madras University and a Masters in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (1981). Balasubramaniam’s key area of expertise has been in general management, starting new business, turn around management and project management. He is presently pursuing a PhD in management.
Dr. V. Sita, is presently theProfessor and Dean of the School of Management Studies in the Central University of Hyderabad. Prof Sita holds a PhD from the University of Hyderabad and also an FDP from the Indian Institute of Amhedabad. Her main areas of interest arePublic Policy, Human Resource Management, Performance Management, Entrepreneurship andWomen's Studies.She has been a faculty member of Institute of Public Entreprises( IPE), Hyderabad and the Osmania University.She has published several papers and guided scores of PhD scholars.
