The Young Scientist Award-2015 in Horticulture goes to Dr. J. Jerome Jeyakumar from India. The research findings were published on world’s prestigious The Journal for Horticulture. International Agency for Standards and Ratings recognizes the researchers among World's 500 Most Influential Plant Biotechnologists for the year 2015 on earth. His Research article entitled on “In vitro regeneration of Gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.)”
Cucumis anguria L., popularly known as 'pickling cucumber' or 'small cucumber' among the farmers, is an important horticultural crop which is similar in form and nutritional value as that of cucumber. It is also called Gherkin. The fruits of gherkin are contains high amounts of protein, calcium, phosphorous, iron and vitamin and are consumed as boiled, fried, stewed, pickled forms, apart from consuming them fresh as salads and in hamburgers. Gherkin is known for traditional medicinal systems to treat stomach ache, jaundice, hemorrhoids and preventing stone formation in kidney. The pickled gherkins ensure worldwide demand due to which many food companies have started large scale production of gherkin. As favorable conditions for its cultivation prevails in India, particularly in the districts of Pudukottai, Dindugal and Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu, it is exported to many countries worldwide.
The regeneration potential was higher in shoot tip explants in comparison with the nodal explants for direct organogenesis. Supplementation of the culture medium with BAP (0.5 mg/l), ensure shoot regeneration from the explants. In vitro flowering was observed when the medium was fortified with KIN, 2,4-D and GA3 (0.5 mg/l). Indirect organogenesis was observed when the culture medium was supplemented with a combination of BAP (2.0 mg/l) and TDZ (0.5 mg/l). Good percentage of calli were observed when intermodal and petiole were used for the study. The potential for shoot regeneration from somatic tissue-derived calli was high when the calli were subcultured to a medium containing NAA (2.0 m/l) and 2, 4-D (0.5 mg/l). The shootlets produced roots when IBA and NAA (2.0 mg/l) was used in the medium. The regenerated plantlets were hardened successfully under field conditions. The study will be beneficial particularly to the growers of gherkin in terms of its mass propagation through tissue culture means.
