International Agency for Standards and Ratings honors Sowmya Rajashekar and Asna Urooj with Frederick Banting Research Award-2015 in Diabetes for great scientific contribution

Sowmya Rajashekar and Asna Urooj rock the world of Diabetes and Health, while International Media reports confirmed their recognition on World’s 500 Most Influential Diabetologist for Year 2015 on Earth. Sowmya Rajashekar and Asna Urooj are awarded with Frederick Banting Research Award-2015 in Diabetes. In a high profile international competition flooded with thousands of participants from several countries, India has once again proved it’s leadership in the area. Sowmya Rajashekar and Asna Urooj won the meritorious competition and established the international leadership in Subject. International Agency for Standards and Ratings expressed it’s views that Sowmya Rajashekar and Asna Urooj’s efforts will explore tremendous opportunities in this segment leading it to new height. It is surely a matter of pride for civilians of India to have such brain storming intellectuals for close interaction. India has once again confirmed a rich tradition to produce world renowned intellectuals to benefit international society.Sowmya Rajashekar did her schooling in Mysore, Karnataka, India, in Nirmala School and Marimallappa school. Then she did her PUC, in Maharani’s college, Mysore, with CBZH ( chemistry, botany, zoology, home science) as options. She did under graduation in Home science, with food science and nutriion as specialization from the same college, under the University of Mysore, where she secured 10th rank for the university and was awarded with two Gold Medals – The Krishna Bai Gundopanth Award and The Sumathi Sreenivasan Commoration Award. She graduated in the year 2001. She did her post graduation from the University of Mysore in Food Science and Nutrion and graduated in the year 2003 with distinction.
Later she worked as Visiting Faculty in VHD, Central Institute of Home Science, Bangalore, Polytecnic College – hotel management, Bangalore, VLCC Institute, Bangalore. She has directed food science, nutrition, research methodology and dietitics. Presently she is into diet counselling.
Now she is persuing her doctorate studies in “studies on inflammatory bio markers of cardio vascular risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus and their nutritional modulation” under the guidance of Dr. Asna Urooj, Chairperson, Dept. of Food Science and Nutition, University of Mysore, Mysore, India.
Dr. Asna Urooj, obtained M.Sc (1987) and Ph.D (1993) in Food Science & Nutrition, from University of Mysore, currently working as Professor and Chairperson of the Post- Graduate Department of Studies in Food science & Nutrition, University of Mysore, Mysore, India. She is engaged in teaching and research since 3 decades and has received research grants from various funding sources. Her primary area of research interest has been Diabetes and other research areas include (i) Starch digestibility & glycemic responses (ii) Natural antioxidants- chemistry and applications (iii) Anti-hyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of medicinal plants (iv) Disease specific food formulations. She has completed 7 research projects funded by UGC, DST, MHRD, and BBSRC-UK. She is the coordinator for the UGC special assistance program.
Dr. Urooj, serves as a reviewer and editor for several national and international journals. She has 130 research papers published in national and international peer reviewed journals, with 516 citations with h-index of 12. Ten candidates have completed Ph.D under her guidance, while 8 are working. She is a recipient of the prestigious Dr. Kalpana Chawla State award for young women scientist, Prof G.S. Bains Lifetime achievement award, bestowed by Association of Food Scientists & Technologists. She also has received Young Scientist Awards, best paper awards and several other awards for her outstanding achievement and contribution in the field of Nutritional Sciences.
