Namita Soni and Soam Prakash from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Ronald Ross Award-2014 in Vector Control Biotechnology. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'Journal of Parasitology'. In their report on Different geometrical AgNPs for vector control and their added value of antibacterial activity they mention that Mosquitoes are the vector of many diseases. It is now essential to control mosquito population so that people can be protected from mosquito borne diseases. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been synthesized by using the aqueous extract of leaf and bark of Ficus religiosa. We have also investigated the efficacy of synthesized AgNPs against the Culex quinquefasciatus filariasis, Anopheles stephensi malaria vector and were tested for the antibacterial effect against the gram positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus thuringiensis. The results were recorded by using the UV-visible spectrophotometry and the geometries of AgNPs were obtained by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The efficacy test was performed at different concentrations for period of different lengths by using the probit analysis. The synthesized AgNPs were of different geometries and size. The first instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus have shown the 100% mortality within 15 min. The pupae of Cx. quinquefasciatus against the AgNPs synthesized by using the aqueous extract of leaves of F. religiosa (LC50 15, LC90 90, LC99 110 ppm) after 3 h and for the adults (LC50 0.12, LC90 0.99, LC99 2.83 µL/cm2) after 1:15 min. The zone of inhibition occurred at the concentration level of 50 µl. We can conclude here, that different geometrical AgNPs would be a strategy for developing a Nano biomaterial for vector control and their added value of antibacterial activity. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Namita Soni and Soam Prakash as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Namita Soni and Soam Prakash to world.
Authors conclude that, the silver nano spherical, rod, trianular and cube could be successfully synthesized by using the aqueous extract of leaves and bark of Ficus religiosa (Peepal tree). These silver nanoparticles have been tested as larvicides, pupicides and adulticides Cx. quinquefasciatus filariasis vector and An. stephensi malaria vector. Significantly, these synthesized AgNPs tested their antibacterial activity against the gram positive bacteria B. suntilis and B. thuringiensis. The results indicate distinctively that the synthesis of silver Nano spherical, Nano rod, Nano triangle and Nano cube could be suitable for developing a biological agent as larvicides for controlling disease carrying mosquito vector control. The antibacterial activity occurred due to the penetration of the silver nanoparticles into the cell walls, reducing the function of the micro-organisms.
Nano biomaterial by F. religiosa. Efficacy against Cx. quinquefasciatus and An. stephensi. Antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria.
This study deals with the laboratory efficacy testing of silver nanoparticles synthesized using the Ficus religiosa medicinal plant against the mosquito of Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus. The limitation of study is in laboratory evaluation of above mentioned activities.
It is recommended that these silver nanoparticles would be helpful to control mosquito population.
Prof. Soam Prakash critically revised the manuscript. Namita Soni studied design and supervision, perform experimental work and drafted the manuscript, perform statistical analysis.
