In most cases, the environment is used in an unsustainable manner thereby jeopardizing the future of the Biophysical environment, Socio-economic environment and the Built environment. The place of environmental planning in the drive towards achieving sustainable development cannot be over emphasized especially considering the fact that human health is at stake and biodiversity in general. The use of the green building or rather its introduction in Nigeria will go a long way towards avoiding wastage of environmental resources for sustenance; this has succeeded in other parts of the world. Improper Land use planning has been observed to be the bane for achieving sustainable development especially in the urban areas because it entails proper course of action that embraces environmental friendliness and sustainability. Human health has been established to have a link with the cleanliness of the environment; therefore, sanitation is encouraged to achieve a sustainable environment and development through flood control. Using these sustainability strategies discussed earlier in the paper will ensure environmentally friendly and healthy society. Environmental auditing will serve as a check on the use of the biophysical, socioeconomic, and the built environment. A planned environment is a sustainable environment.
Environmental planning is required within the context of sustainable development. The need for Green building technologies (sustainable building) for environmentally responsible and resource-efficiency throughout the lifecycle of the structure. Ensuring proper Land use planning for compatibility, complementarity, comprehensiveness, and economy in the use of land. Sustainable flood control and sanitation through planning approach. Environmental auditing to ensure best practices are adhered to in the use of environment in Nigeria.
The limitations in this research/paper comprise absence of maps from relevant organizations in Nigeria to show the areas affected by ravages of unsustainable use of the environment. The limited planning data of various towns and cities as well as updated plan maps also posed challenges in the course of writing this paper.
The policy aspect of the environmental sustainability and planning looks good on paper but enforcement framework is weak in Nigeria. Some of the environmental laws need amendment and stringent legislation be put in place for proper workability. Funding for implementation of say the Green building technologies can be done through Public-Private-Partnership (PPP).
The need to explore the use of green building technologies in Nigeria is the initiative of the author of this paper because of the sustainability drive and environmental resource-efficiency idea in it.
