Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya rock the world of Phytochemistry, while International Media reports confirmed their recognition on World’s 500 Most Influential Phytochemists for Year 2015 on Earth. Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya are awarded with Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry. In a high profile international competition flooded with thousands of participants from several countries, India has once again proved it’s leadership in the area. Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya won the meritorious competition and established the international leadership in Phytochemistry. International Agency for Standards and Ratings expressed it’s views that Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya’s efforts will explore tremendous opportunities in this segment leading it to new height. It is surely a matter of pride for civilians of India to have such brain storming intellectuals for close interaction. India has once again confirmed a rich tradition to produce world renowned intellectuals to benefit international society.
Dr. Jignasu P. Mehta is working with Department of Chemistry, Maharaja Krishnakumarsihji Bhavnagar University since July-1996 having 16 years of experience in Analytical Chemistry subject with very good exposure to new advanced instrumental techniques. He managed M.Sc previous and final year (Specialization: Analytical Chemistry) students for theoretical and laboratory work. Have good knowledge of Environmental Chemistry topic with basic fundamental to recent topics like Carbon credit. He worked as Principal Investigator project sanctioned by DST under the Fast Track scheme and produced 6 Ph. D. students and published 16 papers. 03 students are working for their Ph. D. He is Graduate in Science with Chemistry (1989) from Sir P. P. Institute of Science, Bhavnagar-India Post Graduate in Science with Analytical Chemistry as main subject (1991) from Department of Chemistry, Maharaja Krishankumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Ph. D. in Science with Chemistry as subject (1998). Title of his thesis “Simultaneous Interaction Two Chemically Dissimilar Metal Ions with Multi Donor Biomolecules: An Electrochemical and Absorption Spectral Study”. He worked as an Associate Professor in the subject of Analytical Chemistry since July 2008 onwards, as Reader in pre-revised scale of Government from July 2005 to June 2008 and as Sr. Lecturer from August 1998 to June 2005 Started career as Lecturer in July 1996 in Department of Chemistry, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, India.
Prof. Balubhai A. Golakiya is Professor and Head at Department of Biotechnology, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, India. He did M. Sc. in Biochemistry-biotechnology. He has completed Ph.D.
Dr. Vadia Sohil H. is Research Scholar at Department of Chemistry, Maharaja Krishnakumarsihji Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar, India. He did Ph. D in Chemistry. He is conducting practical for M.Sc. Students of semester I to IV also taking the Lectures for analytical chemistry of students III & IV. He has done Anti-microbial activity as a work plan & In-vitro practically performed and Practical Work done at “Junagadh Agriculture University (Bio-Chemistry Department).” Performing Sample analysis of industrial products as MOU sanction with department of chemistry.
Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Phytochemistry'. In their report on Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of minor millet extracts they mention that In vitro antimicrobial assay and antioxidant property of the three genders of minor millets (Echinochloa crus-galli, Panicum miliaceum L., Panicum sumatrense) were evaluated. Antimicrobial assay of six extracts of three species were evaluated against bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 96), Bacillus megaterium (MTCC-428), Escherichia coli (MTCC 443) and Pseudomonas aeruginos (MTCC1688) and fungal pathogens Aspergillus niger (MTCC 282) and Fusarium oxysporum (MTCC-1755). It is concluded from the results that phytochemicals are responsible for such inhibition of multi resistance microorganisms and could be a source of new antibacterial drugs. IC50 for various extracts were determined for DPPH scavenging, bleaching of β- carotene and percentage inhibition of H2O2 and compared with standard positive controls viz. butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) for DPPH, propyl gallate for β-carotene and ascorbic acid for H2O2 assay. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Jignasu P. Mehta, Sohil H. Vadiab and Balu A. Golakiya to world.
Results are encouraging as the sources for NSAID drug are natural and hence, it may not have side effects like synthetic molecules. The traditional methods of extraction are promising since the yield extracts are devoid of acute toxicity on rats. In order to go toward a valuation of these traditional extracts in the form of phyto-drugs, follow-up studies must be carried out in particular on their stability and the evolution of the hematological and biochemical parameters.
Plants are natural source for phytochemicals, which can be useful as therapeutic agents. Extracts of minor millets are known for their antioxidant activities but are useful as safe antimicrobial agents. Phytochemicals from Panicum sumatrense were showed good antimicrobial activities as compared to two other genders of minor millets
Due to shortage of some standard phenolics and flavonoids, we are unable to identify all extracted phytochemicals from three genders of minor millets. This lack of standard chemicals is due to lack of funding at or place and hence it was not possible to procure all necessary chemicals for qualitative and quantitative analysis of each active ingredient.
Isolation of single component from crude extract is also challenging task and this part is partially achieved with the help of conventional column chromatographic technique but complete isolation was not possible, as we do not have flash chromatographic technique in our department.
Authors personally recommend that one should have collaborative research with well-established institute to carry out in-depth study of natural products. This will enable teachers like us those have little facilities or lack of funding to work for complete isolation of single component from crude extract of plants.
