They are largely grown in drylands, hence the technologies have to be manoeuvred accordingly. This is because we started treating food items as trading commodities. Those who are not producing it are just trading the commodity with huge wealth with them. They are actually deciding the price. Food items should not be traded! Import of lentils is a regular process carried out year round depending on the stock, demand and domestic supply.

Long-time traders and market experts allege that domestic hoarders seem to be the key players responsible for the rising prices, besides new market entrants like MNCs and large firms which are into trading. "Multinationals and retail chains have become the new market regulators who enjoy enough liberty to singlehandedly control the market. They pour huge money to buy the crops directly from farmers at cheaper rates and pile up stocks to create artificial market demand

The Tur dal price in the wholesale market was around Rs 75 per kg in the morning, and in the retail market, the price would go up to Rs 85 per kg

The supermarkets are buying up huge quantities of food items for offering discounts to customers on public holidays such as the Republic Day. This is having an adverse impact on the prices for ordinary consumers.

Farmers in India, China, Pakistan and other South Asian countries are yet to face festivals. Ukraine, the US, Australia, Myanmar and a few African countries also contribute to India’s pulses need. Approximately, India’s annual import bill of pulses alone is $2.6 billion. People in India have anger on social sites-
