Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar are helping to cultivate world''s future scientists. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to excel. In historic victory the celebrity scientists: Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar honored with Kirchhoff Research Award-2015 in Veterinary Science. Ahead of several thousands competitors, Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar representing Ethiopia won prestigious Kirchhoff Research Award-2015 in Veterinary Science. Again Ethiopia has proved its International leadership via producing brilliant scientists in the form of Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar. IASR expressed, 'It is a privilege to have such international celebrity from Veterinary Science among us who will shape the future of this domain.' Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar made International news headlines while IASR announced them among World’s 500 Most Influential Veterinologists for Year 2015 on Earth.
Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar from Ethiopia made a historical victory over the international competition and won Kirchhoff Research Award-2015 in Veterinary Science. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Veterinary Science'. In their report on An Insight Review on the Role of Fungi in Mastitis of Dairy Animals and Its Economical Importance they mention that Mastitis, which has multiple and complex etiology, is a common syndrome among dairy industry. It is widespread in dairy herds and associated with a significant reduction in milk yield resulting in increased costs of production and deteriorated quality of milk and milk products. The initiative of this critical review manuscript was to assess the role of fungi in mastitis of dairy animals. According to some literature data, fungal infections in dairy animals account for 2%–13% of all cases of mastitis in dairy animals. However, the occurrence of mastitis depends on the interaction of host, agent, and environmental factors. The most frequently encountered fungi speices in the pathology of mycotic mastitis in cows are: Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., Trichosporon spp., Cryptococcus spp., Penicillium spp., Cryptococcus neoformans, Rhodotorula spp., and Geotrichum candidum. Mycotic mastitis has become an increasing problem in animals and humans due to the wide use of antibiotics in mastitis therapy. Researches aimed on investigation on mycotic mastitis are required in relation to strict biosecurity practices as well as pattern of antibiotic therapy adopted for the treatment of these cases. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar as valuable intellectuals for the Ethiopia offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for Ethiopia is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus Ethiopia which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Teshager Dubie, Tesfaye Sisay, Mu-uz Gebru and Yimer Muktar to world.
Early diagnosis of sub-clinical mastitis with reliable tests facilitates successful treatment and control. The environmental contamination associated with lack of hygiene during the milking and poor equipment cleaning leads to the development of mastitis. Mycotic mastitis has become an increasing problem due to the wide use of antibiotics in mastitis therapy. The effects of mastitis on dairy animals’ health and milk production highlight an urgent need to develop effective strategy of prevention and control. The constantly changing predominance of etiological agents in different geographical locations must be considered while adopting and developing mastitis control strategies. Research aimed on investigation on the mycotic mastitis is required in relation to the hygienic and management practices as well as pattern of antibiotic therapy adopted for the treatment of these cases and also effort should be encouraged to apply substitutes of antimicrobials such as probiotics and bioactive natural compounds for prophylactic and therapeutic use since mastitis has high public health hazard. Good hygiene and sanitation practices of animal farm and judicious use of antibiotics will lower incidence of bovine mycotic mastitis.
