N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini as Pride of Nation Rose to Pride of World with Landmark Camillo Golgi Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry
23 May, 2015, India, USA NEWS CORP
N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini rock the world of Phytochemistry, while International Media reports confirmed their recognition on World’s 500 Most Influential Phytochemists for Year 2015 on Earth. N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini are awarded with Camillo Golgi Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry. In a high profile international competition flooded with thousands of participants from several countries, India has once again proved it’s leadership in the area. N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini won the meritorious competition and established the international leadership in Phytochemistry. International Agency for Standards and Ratings expressed it’s views that N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini’s efforts will explore tremendous opportunities in this segment leading it to new height. It is surely a matter of pride for civilians of India to have such brain storming intellectuals for close interaction. India has once again confirmed a rich tradition to produce world renowned intellectuals to benefit international society.
Dr. Nalini M.S., MSc., MPhil., PhD, is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Studies in Botany, University of Mysore. Since 2007, she has served the department and taught phycology, reproductive biology of angiosperms and plant morphogenesis. Current research includes projects funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India. The thrust areas of research include medicinal plants and phytochemicals, microbial endophytes and bioprospecting with special reference to the plants of the Talacauvery subcluster of Western Ghat region, a biodiversity hotspot in the southern Karnataka, India.
Ms. Anvitha N.R., is a postgraduate student, in the Department of Studies in Botany, University of Mysore. Currently, she has completed her Master’s program in Philosophy in Botany. She is now pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in education, in Mysore, India. The paper is the outcome of the MSc project work funded by the University of Mysore, Mysore, India.
N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Camillo Golgi Research Award-2015 in Phytochemistry. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'International Journal of Medicinal Plants'. In their report on Phytochemical Screening, Total phenolic content and Radical Scavenging Activity of Leaf and Flower Extracts of Strobilanthes heyneanus Nees they mention that Objective: The focus of the present study deals with the phytochemical analysis and detection of total phenolic and radical scavenging potentials of the solvent extracts from the leaves and flowers of Strobilanthes heyneanus Nees. (Acanthaceae), endemic to the Western Ghats, India. Experimental: Phytochemical analysis was conducted for three solvent extracts viz., hexane, methanol and aqueous. The extracts were tested for the presence of total phenolics and diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Results: The leaf and flower extracts indicated the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids and terpenoids as phytoconstituents. High total phenolics were found in the aqueous extract of leaves (165 µg/ml), while the moderate phenolic content was detected in the aqueous (69 µg/ml) and methanol extracts (62 µg/ml) of the flower. High radical scavenging activity was detected in the hexane and aqueous flower extracts (95 to 98%), while low activity was detected in the methanol extracts of both flowers and leaves. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated the potentials of S. heyneanus extracts as sources of phytochemicals. The aqueous extracts have depicted high phenolic and radical scavenging activity which suggests that these extracts could be subjected to fractionation by chromatographic techniques and the bioactive components be identified in future studies. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of N.R. Anvitha and Monnanda S. Nalini to world.
Plants of Acanthaceae family have many important medicinal properties. Strobilanthes is one of the most interesting genera in the family Acanthaceae known for its gregarious flowering. In the present study phytochemical screening of S. heyneanus flower and leaf extracts showed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids and terpenoids as phytoconstituents. The total phenolic content was more in leaf aqueous extract and radical scavenging activity activity was high in both hexane and aqueous extracts of flower and leaves. The phytochemical constituents of this plant are responsible for its medicinal properties.
First report on the presence of phytochemicals from S. heyneanus collected from the Western Ghats. Phytochemicals recorded as tannins, saponins, flavonoids and terpenoids are responsible for the medicinal property. Aqueous extracts of both flower as well as the leaves contain high phenolics as well as radical scavenging potentials. As the plants were collected from a single location, due to inaccessible conditions Authors could not collect samples from other locations of the subcluster. This has hampered their studies as they could have got wide variation in the phytochemical content. Due to paucity of time, they could not streamline their studies on the characterization of the phytochemical responsible for the total phenolic content as well as the radical scavenging. These are the main limitations in Author’s research.
Author’s future goals a set to determine the phytochemical responsible for the radical scavenging potentials of the extracts. This would be possible by subjecting the positive extracts to bioassay-guided fractination studies followed by characterization studies involving High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Liquid chromatography-Mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In vivo studies on the radical scavenging potentials of the aqueous extracts in rat models can elucidate the antioxidative as well as its protective benefits.
