The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into an apparent explosion in a restroom at Yasukuni Shrine in central Tokyo, Japan.
The police received a call at around 10 AM on Monday that the sound of an explosion had been heard from the shrine's south gate.
Police found a hole about 30 centimeters across in the ceiling.

The metropolitan police say its bomb squad discovered suspicious objects such as batteries and wires at the scene. They say no one was injured.
Yasukuni Shrine began its annual Festival of First Fruits and there were more visitors than usual.
The police observes that the incident may have been an attack specifically targeting the shrine.
Yasukuni Shrine honors Japan's war dead. Those remembered include military and political leaders convicted of war crimes by an international military tribunal.
