The Breast Research Journal suggests that women should turn towards- Mammography; is a specific type of breast imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to detect cancer early – before women experience symptoms – when it is most treatable.Women should undergo regular, annual screening mammography beginning at age 45, instead of the current recommendation of age 40.
Women aged 55 years and older should transition to biennial, instead of annual, screening. In addition, clinical breast examination is not recommended for breast cancer screening among average-risk women at any age.
Women should start annual screening as early as age 40 and recommended that women 55 years and older should have the opportunity to continue screening annually. Tell your doctor about any breast symptoms or problems, prior surgeries, hormone use, whether you have a family or personal history of breast cancer, and if there’s a possibility you are pregnant. If possible, obtain copies of your prior mammograms and make them available to your radiologist on the day of your exam. Leave jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to wear a gown. Don’t wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts as these may appear on the mammogram and interfere with correct diagnosis.
Early detection of breast cancer with screening mammography means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, possibly before it has spread. Results from randomized clinical trials and other studies show that screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74, especially for those over age 50 (1). However, studies to date have not shown a benefit from regular screening mammography in women under age 40 or from baseline screening mammograms (mammograms used for comparison) taken before age 40.
The Breast Research Journal wants maximizing reductions in breast cancer mortality and reducing years of life lost while minimizing the associated harms among the population of women.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. False-positive results occur when radiologists decide mammograms are abnormal but no cancer is actually present. All abnormal mammograms should be followed up with additional testing (diagnostic mammograms, ultrasound, and/or biopsy) to determine whether cancer is present. The Breast Research Journal wants Governments should ensure that uninsured or low-income women obtain a free or low-cost screening mammogram.
Even though death from breast cancer has declined steadily since 1990, largely due to improvements in early detection and treatment, an estimated 40,300 women in the U.S. will die of breast cancer in 2015.
