Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei rock the world of Biodiversity, while International Media reports confirmed their recognition on World’s 500 Most Influential Biodiversitologists for Year 2015 on Earth. Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei are awarded with J.D. Hooker Research Award-2015 in Biodiversity. In a high profile international competition flooded with thousands of participants from several countries, India has once again proved it’s leadership in the area. Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei won the meritorious competition and established the international leadership in Biodiversity. International Agency for Standards and Ratings expressed it’s views that Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei’s efforts will explore tremendous opportunities in this segment leading it to new height. It is surely a matter of pride for civilians of India to have such brain storming intellectuals for close interaction. India has once again confirmed a rich tradition to produce world renowned intellectuals to benefit international society.
Abhijit Baruah is Research Scholar at Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, Silchar, India. He did his graduation and Post graduation in Zoology from Dibrugarh University.
Laishram Ricky Meitei is Research Scholar at Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, Silchar, India. He did his graduation in Biology from Manipur University and Post graduation in Zoology from Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University and Specialization in Entomology.
Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won J.D. Hooker Research Award-2015 in Biodiversity. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Biodiversity'. In their report on Diversity and Seasonal Abundance of Swallowtail Butterflies population in Dangori Reserve Forest, Tinsukia District, Assam, India they mention that The temporal patterns in the swallowtail communities are controlled by various ecological determinants and are known for their value as an important ecological indicator group. The diversity and seasonal abundance of swallowtail butterflies was studied in Dangori Reserve Forest, Tinsukia district, Assam from March 2011 to February 2012, in three different seasons using transects counting method. A total of 23 species of swallowtails belonging to 6 genera were recorded. The genera Papilio was dominant representing 9 species and Lamproptera and Triodes were least with 1 species each (Figure 2). Papilio demoleus and Papilio polytes were the dominant swallowtails. The months of November-February contributing 197 individuals out of 359 individuals recorded (Figure 3) was the best for butterflies. The study area serves as an ecotone transitional zone between the Assam Valley and Arunachal Pradesh. Thousands of butterflies migrate from Arunachal Pradesh every year transforming the forest into large breeding grounds. The forest reserve faces immense pressure with increasing anthropogenic activities and agricultural practices. Proper conservation and management plans are thus needed to save the swallowtails of the forest reserve. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Atanu Bora, Abhijit Baruah and L.R. Meitei to world.
Butterfly watching is an important component of eco-tourism worldwide where butterfly ranching has been encouraged thereby giving a legitimate source of income to local communities on a sustainable basis. The diversity and abundance patterns of swallowtail butterflies showed that all the species except a few are fairly distributed in all the seasons. The winter seasons have more abundance than dry or rainy seasons.
The association between butterflies and plants is always highly specific. Unlike bees, butterflies collect their nectar from flower. Thus pollination, a crucial link in the survival of ecosystem, is one such factor that needs to be well understood to develop appropriate strategies for conservation of the biodiversity. Diversity study of butterflies will help in enhancing community conservation as a matter of research for a sustainable ecosystem. The government should implement policies that encourage the participation of local communities in conservation as well as making a source of income through eco-tourism. This is probably the first scientific documentation on swallowtail butterflies in the study area. From the present study the basic information of swallowtail diversity and abundance patterns can be used full for further ecological assessment and also comparative research. The study will helps in adopting necessary conservative measures to support the swallowtails of the study area. You can share this News URL on Facebook or your Social Media Site/ blog.
