Dr. Kawalinder Kaur Girgla did her MBBS from Government Medical College Amritsar in 1994 and M.D. Physiology from the same institute in 2000. She joined as Assistant Professor in Physiology in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Amritsar in 2001. Currently she is a Professor.
Dr. Harsh Chalana joined MBBS in Government Medical College Amritsar in 1997 and got his MD (Psychiatry) Degree From Dayanand Medical College Ludhiana in 2007.He is working as associate professor in Psychiatry in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Amritsar for the last 5 years.
Dr. Harjot Singh did his MBBS and MD degrees from Government Medical College Amritsar in 2004 and 2009 respectively. He joined as senior resident in psychiatry in Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Amritsar in 2009 and promoted as Assistant Professor in 2013. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Physiology and Health'. In their report on Effect of Rajyoga Meditation on Heart Rate and Blood Pressure in Patients of Anxiety and Depression they mention that Background: Life’s stressful events cause anxiety and depression, both of which have deleterious and cumulative effects on the human body. The practice of meditation offers a way to relieve that stress. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Rajyoga meditation on anxiety, depression and cardiovascular parameters [Heart Rate (HR), Blood Pressure (BP)] in 87 females visiting the Psychiatry department. Materials and Methods- Females suffering from mild to moderate anxiety and depression as determined by Hamilton anxiety (HAM-A) and depression (HAM-D) scales were selected for the study. They were randomised into two groups; Meditators (n=51) and Controls (n=36). Their heart rate and BP were monitored. The meditators were taught Rajyoga meditation for 8 weeks. Results: Meditators showed improvement as suggested by significant reduction in HR, BP, HAM-A (p<0.001) and HAM -D (p<0.001) scores. Patients in control group also showed improvement; however, the percentage of relief was early and more in meditators as compared to the control group. Conclusion: Rajyoga meditation can be applied an important non pharmacological preventive intervention. The small sample size and shorter duration of meditation were some of the limitations of this study. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Stress is a growing and significant public health problem that results in important physiological, emotional, social and economic consequences to individuals, their family and the community at large. For individuals looking for self-help interventions to assist with the management of their stress and anxiety, yoga and associated physiological variables, yoga and meditation may provide viable treatment modalities for relieving these symptoms. The present health care system has become illness-centred rather than patient-centred. We should replace the reductionist approach of caring the sick with a Holistic one. Rajyoga meditation should serve not only as an auxiliary tool to the conventional medicine in stress but also as a preventive tool. . This study also found that female sex and nuclear family structure were associated with higher levels of depression and lower quality-of-life. These findings have great significance in the context of the rapidly changing socio-demographic profile of developing countries, and needs to be explored in greater detail in future. In view of the small sample size, the results may need confirmation by larger studies. This study was done in the rural population. Further studies should be done in urban population also. In this context, simple but planned yoga intervention has a significant scope in reducing stress and may be a cost-effective method to handle the imminent crisis. This is an area, which needs more exploration in both research and service settings.
