CT-MRI Image Fusion Effect on Dose Delivered and Distribution for Astrocytoma Radiation Therapy has published on The Journal of Radiology.The Journal of Radiology is World's Most Read Journal in the area of research in Radiology : World Report, 2015.
Ahmed El-Hadaad and Mariam Isam from Egypt made a historical victory over the international competition and won International Archimedes Research Award-2015 in Oncology. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal of Radiology'. In their report on CT-MRI Image Fusion Effect on Dose Delivered and Distribution for Astrocytoma Radiation Therapy they mention that Purpose: This work aimed to describe the benefits of CT-MRI fusion to consolidate the accuracy of conformal
radiation therapy for Egyptian astrocytoma patients. Methods: Thirty four patients with astrocytoma tumor who underwent 3D conformal radiotherapy were selected in this study. CT and MRI imaging was done for all the patients after surgery. The PTVCT and PTVCT-MRI tumor were volumetrically measured and compared. The center of PTV delineated on CT and CT-MRI were computed and the shift between the two centers of PTV was determined. Results: The mean and median for PTV measured by CT-MRI was 66.77cm3±48.77 and 43.65 (range 8.6 to 162.2) respectively. For CT the mean and median for PTV was 53.82cm3± 45.66 and 31.7 (range 12.4 to 180.1) respectively. The differences between the center of PTV of the two PTV’s detected spatial 3D shifts ranging from (-4 mm to 5 mm) with an average of 0.3 mm for x direction, (-2 mm to 5 mm) with an average of 1.3 mm for y, and (-2 mm to 4 mm) with an average of 0.7 mm for z direction respectively. The prescribed dose was ﬁtted on PTVCT. The V95-PTVCT-MRI was lower than the V95-PTVCT by 22.5%. Conclusions: The result showed that MRI is an essential modality in radiotherapy for planning astrocytoma tumors.. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy.
