Harshata Pal, Shekhar Ghosh and Swati Sen Mandi from India made a historical victory over the international competition and won Molecular Taxonomy Research Award-2015 in Threatened Taxa. Their research was highlighted in international media and gathered a large worldwide attention in scientific circles while it appeared in world's most read journal 'The Journal for Threatened Taxa'. In their report on Molecular Authentication of Endangered Medicinal Plant Panax assamicus and Panax bipinnatifidus from North-East India by Species Specific AFLP Marker they mention that Panax assamicus R. N. Banerjee and Panax bipinnatifidus Seem are two most important endangered species rarely found in North-East India. Due to overexploitation this medicinally valuable plant, it is under the threat of extinction in North-East India. Therefore, molecular documentation of few accessions of Panax assamicus and Panax bipinnatifidus from different locations in Meghalay and Arunachal Pradesh was carried out to develop species specific Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) marker in automated DNA sequencer. Unique set of common alleles generated from electropherogram in AFLP analysis, depending on primer pairs viz. EcoRI-ACA*/MSeI-CTA, EcoRIAAG*/MSeICTC, EcoRI-ACG*/ MSeI-CTG and EcoRI-AGC*/MSeI-CAA, for different accessions of same species are regarded as species specific molecular markers. Both the species Panax assamicus and Panax bipinnatifidus showed 85.25% and 94.55% polymorphism, respectively. The similarity coefficient matrix reflected genetic relatedness among Panax landraces of two species. Cluster I is comprised of four land races of Panax bipinnatifidus and Cluster II is consisted four land races of Panax assamicus in the dendogram, depicting the significance of molecular taxonomy over classical taxonomy to resolute taxonomic complexity of Panax species in NE India. Along with the information on molecular authentication to resist adulteration of these two endangered species the recent research also provides species specific DNA marker relating to catalogue these plant genetic resources. Under their leadership the research area is surely likely to expand beyond the horizons. It will be worthy to explore the further potential under their legacy. Harshata Pal, Shekhar Ghosh and Swati Sen Mandi as valuable intellectuals for the India offer exclusive opportunities for scholars around the world. One of the most attractive weightage for India is to have the awardees for promotion of the concerned scientific discipline for the benefit of its civilians. Thus India which has excellent track record to produce brain storming intellectuals, has offered a new extension in terms of Harshata Pal, Shekhar Ghosh and Swati Sen Mandi to world.
Molecular characterization represented in this report would authentically distinguish Panax bipinnatifidus and Panax assamicus and thereby in addition to resolving associated taxonomic confusion with these species in NE India, the significance of this study stems from the fact that it provides an authentication tool to detect adulterants in the crude drug preparations and to maintain the quality standard in the herbal drug industry. Again, this study also provides species specific molecular marker along with the distinct AFLP fingerprinting pattern for two species and and the phylogenetic tree with two clusters for supporting the sovereignty right and development of passport data.
Experiment has been carried out by Dr. Harshata Pal and Sekhar Ghosh, manuscript has been written by Dr. Harshata Pal and edited and checked by Prof. Swati Sen Mandi. A Federal Government move to sideline a $1.9 billion budget cut to higher education courses and push ahead with fee deregulation has failed to sway the Senate crossbench. The measures — fee deregulation and the funding cut — were at the heart of the Coalition's university overhaul, which seemed doomed to fail for a second time in the Senate and have now been split into two separate pieces of legislation. The original bill faced heavy opposition, with only one crossbench senator out of eight publicly prepared to back it — far short of the six votes required. But hiving off the budget cut to a separate vote has not won over the vote — with at least five crossbench senators telling the ABC they will not vote for the core deregulation legislation.
